Bullhorn lip lift
A bullhorn lip lift is a procedure that optically enlarges the lips and makes the face more attractive. It shortens the philtrum, i.e., the distance between the nose and the lips, thereby revealing more of the pink vermillion (the red part) of the lips. The ideal distance between the nose and the lips should be about 1.2-1.5 cm. Some people have a longer philtrum due to genetics, while for others it has lengthened with age. The bullhorn lip lift is also suitable for clients who regularly undergo lip filler procedures and would like to achieve a permanent effect. This procedure will optically enlarge the lips, often eliminating the need for fillers. Other suitable candidates are those who have thinning lip vermillion and those who have wrinkles above the lips.

Description of the surgical procedure
Consultation
An initial consultation is a very important part of the surgery. The client tells the surgeon the reasons why they decided to undergo the procedure, and the surgeon explains what the client can expect from the surgery, what results are realistic, and advises them on the most suitable procedure for them. During the consultation, the doctor answers all the client’s questions.
Before the procedure
Before each surgery, it is necessary to assess the overall health of each client. With local anesthesia, blood samples can be taken in a laboratory or by a general practitioner or internist.
The procedure
A bullhorn lip lift is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. Before the operation, the client discusses everything once again with the surgeon and then receives premedication. In the operating room, we apply a local anesthetic by injection. This can be slightly uncomfortable, but this application only takes a moment, and the client hardly feels the subsequent operation. The surgeon removes excess skin just under the nose, thereby shortening the philtrum. The wound is closed with a very fine stitch.
After the procedure
Immediately after the procedure, the scar is covered with a plaster, which is left in place until the stitches are removed. The client leaves the clinic immediately after the operation. There is a 24-hour hotline available, which the client can contact if necessary. It is crucial to follow a rest regimen for at least three days. Swelling and bruising occur individually and usually last for 1-2 weeks. You can return to normal office work after a few days. Two weeks after the surgery, the client starts to do gentle pressure scar massage and begins to lubricate the scar with silicone cream. The scar is less visible after two weeks and barely noticeable after a few months, but it is important to take care of it. It is advisable to do pressure massage twice a day for several months. The postoperative care bag that the client receives from us after the operation contains all the necessary medications and creams.
Results and durability of direct lip lift
You will see the difference immediately after the procedure, however, the final result will only be visible approximately 1-2 months after the surgery, when the mild swelling subsides. The durability of the results of a bullhorn lip lift depends on age, genetics, and lifestyle. The procedure can also be combined with other rejuvenation procedures in the facial area.
Risks
No surgery is completely risk-free. However, these risks are minimized by a skilled surgeon, adherence to preoperative instructions, and conscientious postoperative care. The client is informed of the most common risks before surgery.
Frequently asked questions and answers
The ideal distance between the nose and the upper lip is usually 11-13 mm for women and slightly more for men. The exact ideal depends on the proportions of the entire face. If the distance is longer, it makes the face appear tired or old. In that case, it can be aesthetically corrected, for example, with a lip lift.
The scar from a bullhorn lip lift is usually very inconspicuous and well hidden, but its visibility depends on the technique used, skin type, and aftercare. The incision is made naturally in the creases and folds under the nose, which helps to conceal the scar. The scar is usually subtle, thin, and pale after healing (within a few months to a year). In most clients, it is almost invisible.
Yes, they can be combined – for example, if the client needs to reduce the distance under the nose and at the same time lift the corners of the mouth or adjust the shape of the upper lip. The surgeon will evaluate which combination is suitable with regard to the final effect and minimal visibility of scars. The combination can be planned so that the procedures complement each other and enhance the overall appearance of the lips and smile.
