How to get rid of a double chin? From exercise to liposuction to a deep neck lift
A double chin is one of the most common aesthetic problems that can change the overall expression of the face. It can visually add years, disrupt the sharp jawline, and make the face appear tired or heavier. However, it is far from only affecting overweight people – it is often caused by genetics, anatomical disposition, or the natural aging process.
The good news is that today’s aesthetic medicine offers a wide range of options. Some people can benefit from lifestyle changes, while others can benefit from non-invasive treatments. However, if the goal is to truly change the contours of the face in the long term, surgical solutions are the way to go – chin liposuction or a modern deep neck lift.
Why does a double chin develop?
- Genetics: Many people tend to store fat under their chins, regardless of their weight. This is why a double chin can be a problem for even very slim people.
- Natural aging: As we age, the skin loses collagen and elastin, muscles weaken, and the distribution of fat pads changes. The result is a less pronounced jawline and a looser neck area.
- Weight fluctuations: Significant weight fluctuations can cause not only fat deposits in the chin, but also loss of skin elasticity.
- Anatomical predispositions: For some people, the main problem is not fat, but deeper anatomical structures of the neck – for example, fat pads under the muscle or a more prominent platysma muscle. In these cases, conventional liposuction may not produce optimal results.

Will exercise or diet help?
If a double chin is caused by an overall increase in body fat, weight loss can partially reduce its appearance. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate hydration are all beneficial to the overall appearance and quality of your skin. Facial gymnastics and neck exercises can help tighten the muscles slightly, but it is important to have realistic expectations. They cannot remove fat cells or tighten loose skin.
Non-invasive and minimally invasive options
For a less pronounced double chin, non-surgical treatments may be appropriate, such as:
- injection lipolysis,
- ultrasound lipolysis,
- radiofrequency treatment,
- mesotherapy,
- technology that supports collagen production.
The advantage is minimal recovery, the disadvantage is the need for repeated treatments and usually less pronounced effects. The appropriate method will be recommended by your treating doctor.
Chin liposuction – when fat is the main problem
If the double chin is caused by excess subcutaneous fat and the skin is still sufficiently elastic, chin liposuction is a very effective solution.
During the procedure, the surgeon uses fine cannulas to remove excess fat and shape the contour of the lower jaw. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, usually under local anesthesia, and takes approximately one hour.
After surgery, you will need to wear a compression garment for several weeks to help the skin heal properly and tighten. The final result will be visible in approximately two to three months.
Deep neck lift – a solution for a more pronounced double chin and a sagging neck
Not every second chin is caused by fat alone. In many patients, the deeper anatomy of the neck plays a major role – a loose platysma muscle, deep fat pads or loose structures beneath the surface. In these cases, liposuction alone is not enough.
That is why a deep neck lift, a modern surgical method that addresses the cause of the problem in the deeper layers of the neck, is being performed more and more often.
Unlike classic liposuction, the surgeon does not only remove superficial fat, but also works with deep fat pads, adjusts the platysma muscle and models the neck contour from the inside. This allows for a more pronounced transition between the chin and neck and a sharper lower jaw line.
The result is a natural-looking rejuvenation of the neck without an unnaturally tight appearance.
Is a deep neck lift right for you?
Not every problem with the chin area can be solved with liposuction or non-surgical methods. If you are concerned about loss of jawline definition or a fuller neck caused by deeper anatomical structures, a Deep Neck Lift may be the solution. We most often recommend it to patients who have:
- a more pronounced double chin even at normal weight,
- less defined jawline,
- relaxed neck muscles,
- genetically determined neck anatomy,
- deeper fat pads that cannot be removed by liposuction.
Deep neck lift or lower facelift?
Patients often confuse these procedures, yet they solve different problems.
A deep neck lift focuses primarily on the area under the chin and neck. The goal is to create an elegant neck angle, remove a double chin, and improve the contour of the lower jaw.
Lower facelift primarily addresses sagging cheeks, sagging lower face, emerging “crow’s feet” and sagging jawline. At the same time, the appearance of the neck is improved if the problem is primarily caused by facial aging.

Which procedure is suitable for me?
- If you have a dominant double chin and a less defined neck, a deep neck lift is the ideal choice.
- If the main problem is a sagging lower third of the face and sagging cheeks, a lower facelift brings better results.
- For some patients, the best solution is a combination of both procedures, which will allow for a harmonious rejuvenation of the entire transition between the face and neck.
An individual consultation with a plastic surgeon will help determine which method will bring the most natural result.
When you want a sharp jawline back
A double chin may not be a sign of being overweight. It is often the result of genetics, anatomy, or natural aging. While home care and non-invasive methods can help with less noticeable changes, modern plastic surgery offers solutions that can restore harmonious contours to the face and neck.

Double chin liposuction is suitable for clients with good skin elasticity and excess fat, but only for specific indications. On the other hand, a deep neck lift is the ideal choice if the problem is more complex – e.g., sagging muscles, excess fat, loose skin, and a weakly defined neck. It offers a comprehensive, long-term solution with natural results.
Double chin liposuction addresses:
- excess fat under the chin (so-called double chin)
- weakly defined jawline
A deep neck lift addresses:
- sagging muscles (especially the platysma)
- excess fat above as well as below the neck muscle
- loose or excess skin
- lack of distinct angle between chin and neck
A deep neck lift can beautifully tighten the neck and remove excess fat and skin. However, if your chin is smaller or receding, the resulting profile will not be sharp and defined because there is no support. In this case, it may be appropriate to combine a neck lift with a gentle chin augmentation using a temporary hyaluronic acid filler – the result is then harmonious and natural.
The results of a deep neck lift are significant and long-lasting. Even though the aging process continues, the neck will never look as loose as it did before the procedure. For most patients, the effect is so pronounced that a second procedure is not necessary in the long term.
